Cuomo Leads in NYC Mayoral Primary: Marist Poll Shows Commanding Lead

A new Marist College poll reveals a significant lead for former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming Democratic primary for New York City mayor. The poll, conducted in May 2025, shows Cuomo holding a commanding advantage over his opponents.

Cuomo's lead is substantial, with the poll placing him at 37%. Zohran Mamdani, a progressive State Assembly member representing Astoria, holds second place at 18%. The remaining candidates are trailing significantly in the single digits.

The poll's findings suggest that Cuomo could potentially surpass the 50% threshold in a fifth round of ranked-choice voting. This scenario highlights the power of name recognition and the impact of Cuomo's substantial campaign spending on advertising.

Challenger Mamdani's Campaign

Despite Cuomo's lead, Zohran Mamdani's campaign remains active and optimistic. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is focusing his platform on affordability issues in New York City. His proposals include rent freezes, government-run grocery stores, and universal childcare.

"What you see from New Yorkers is they cannot afford to live in this city," Mamdani stated, emphasizing the urgency of his platform. His campaign aims to connect with a million voters in the coming weeks.

Political analyst Hank Scheinkopf commented on the poll results, noting Cuomo's name recognition and campaign spending while acknowledging Mamdani's potential for growth. "If he gets to the numbers that portend in this poll, he will be a long-time player in New York City politics," Scheinkopf said.

Analyzing the Race

While the Democratic primary is six weeks away, the general election is still six months off. This leaves ample time for shifts in public opinion and potential unforeseen events to impact the race. The poll's results provide a snapshot of the current political landscape, but the ultimate outcome remains uncertain.

The race is shaping up to be a fascinating contest between a well-known political figure and a rising progressive voice. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Cuomo's lead is insurmountable or if Mamdani and other candidates can successfully close the gap.
