Suits LA Canceled: NBC Pulls the Plug After Season One
The legal drama world is reeling after NBC announced the unexpected cancellation of its Suits spinoff, Suits LA, ahead of its season one finale.
The 13-episode series, which brought back fan-favorite Suits stars Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and David Costabile as Daniel Hardman, alongside Rick Hoffman's return as Louis Litt in later episodes, ultimately failed to capture the same audience as its predecessor. While the original Suits experienced a meteoric rise in popularity on Netflix in 2023, Suits LA couldn't replicate that success.
The show, led by Stephen Amell as entertainment lawyer Ted, was intended to expand the Suits universe to the West Coast. Creator Aaron Korsh hoped to capitalize on the renewed interest in the original series. However, despite the nostalgic appeal of returning cast members, Suits LA's ratings and overall reception fell short of expectations.
This cancellation comes as no surprise given NBC's recent decision to cancel other shows like Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court, a move largely attributed to the upcoming return of the NBA to the network's fall schedule. Netflix also passed on acquiring Suits LA, further hindering its chances of survival.
While the original Suits enjoyed record-breaking streaming numbers on Netflix after its syndication deal, reaching over 58 billion minutes streamed in 2023, Suits LA did not enjoy a similar resurgence. Its failure to connect with audiences highlights the difficulty of replicating a show's success, even with familiar faces and a proven formula.
The final episode of Suits LA will air on May 18th, marking the end of this brief yet intriguing chapter in the Suits saga. The cancellation raises questions about the future of spinoffs and the ever-changing landscape of television.
