Tornado Terror in Twin Cities! Thousands Without Power!
The Twin Cities metro area and western Minnesota woke up to a chaotic scene Sunday morning following a night of severe storms and tornado warnings. Thousands of residents are grappling with power outages, downed trees, and significant damage after the overnight weather event.
As of 12:20 p.m., over 14,000 Xcel Energy customers remain without power, a decrease from the roughly 50,000 affected earlier. Crews are working diligently to restore service, but the scale of the damage is substantial. Highway 7 in the southwestern metro was temporarily blocked by fallen trees and power lines, causing significant traffic delays.
The Swift County Sheriff's Office confirmed a tornado touchdown five miles east of Holloway around 8 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued multiple tornado warnings for the Twin Cities metro area, including cities like Chanhassen, Waconia, and Mound. While reports of tornadoes near Waconia exist, official confirmation is pending.
The storms also brought significant rainfall, with some areas receiving over two inches. Minneapolis experienced nearly 1.5 inches of rain. The threat isn't entirely over, as another chance of severe weather, including damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes, looms for Sunday night.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to CBS Minnesota for updates and ongoing coverage of the storm's impact and recovery efforts.
